This photo was fantastic ... Phillip Arnold and I (Brian Voge) worked there as bus boys ... We were actually too young to work at the time, so the owner paid us under the table ... It wasn't called the Hillside Restaurant then, it was the Silver Slipper (or something like that) ... other than picking blueberries while visiting my Uncle and Aunt at Ft. Dix New Jersey during the summer between 6th and 7th Grade, and a bit part in a Coca-Cola Safety film in Jr. High (that's why a bunch of our classmates have Social Security numbers issued from Detroit), working at this restaurant was my first paying job ... I sucked at it of course ... never could balance a tray of dirty dishes over my head like they wanted ... Phillip and I got in trouble with the owner when he found out that we were eating one or two steaks for our "Free Meal" every day, and leaving with a huge milkshake sized cup of ice cream every evening. I forgot what Phillip did to get us both fired (it was him, not me), but we were told to never return. The one disgusting thing I remember about this restaurant was we recycled used dinner rolls ... if we put out a basket of dinner rolls and the customers didn't eat them, we were told to return the rolls to the bread warmer. However, if the customer had taken a bite, but the rolls still looked clean (no gravy or cigarette butts in them) we threw them into a special box and every few days they would make bread pudding out of them. It was years before I ever brought myself to eat bread pudding at a restaurant (I still look at it very suspiciously).
