HUBER, JIM - 67
Jim Huber, an Emmy-winning broadcaster whose essays on the human dimension of sports were a staple on CNN during his nearly three decades with Turner Broadcasting, died on Monday in Atlanta. He was 67. “This then is ‘The Sporting Life,’ ” he said in a 1997 segment marking the show’s fifth anniversary. “Not millions or mansions, not hits, runs or errors, but simply mankind’s elegant dance with destiny.”ATLANTA (AP) — Turner Sports says longtime broadcaster Jim Huber has died. He was 67. The cable network says Huber died Monday in Atlanta. A cause of death was not immediately released. A statement from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., said Huber was an Emmy Award-winning essayist who joined Turner Sports full-time in 2000 and was an announcer for professional golf matches and NBA games. The cause was acute leukemia, said CNN, a division of Turner. As host of “The Sporting Life With Jim Huber” on CNN, Mr. Huber said his goal was to relate “stories of grand inspiration, tales of people who challenge life’s odds.” He contributed similar stories to CNN/SI, the 24-hour joint venture by Turner and Sports Illustrated that ended in 2002. He was also a co-anchor with Nick Charles, who died in June, on CNN’s “Sports Tonight,” and in recent years, he covered golf and the N.B.A. for the TBS cable station and the TNT network. He received an Emmy for “Olympic Park Bombing,” his essay on the bombing at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Mr. Huber grew up in Ocala, Fla., and graduated from Ocala High School in 1962, where he was was the Vice President of his class. He went on to graduate from Central Florida Junior College (now the College of Central Florida) in his hometown of Ocala. He was a sportswriter for The Miami News and The Atlanta Journal, and a sports anchor for WXIA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Atlanta, before beginning his 27 years with Turner Broadcasting when he joined CNN in 1984. His memoir, “ A Thousand Goodbyes: A Son's Reflection on Living, Dying, and the Things That Matter Most" (2001), told of being with his parents while his father was dying of liver disease in 1999. His most recent book, “Four Days in July” (2011), recounted Tom Watson’s failed run at winning the 2009 British Open at age 59. Mr. Huber’s survivors include his wife, Carol, and a son, Matthew. In “The Sporting Life,” Mr. Huber often stepped away from the headlines of the day. He told of 13-year-old Lauren Reynolds, who played wheelchair basketball, and he profiled the renowned golfer Gene Sarazen, who was 92. He previously served as an anchor and reporter for CNN/Sports Illustrated and hosted CNN's Pro Golf Weekly and Sporting Life with Jim Huber. David Levy, a Turner president of sales, distribution and sports, said in the statement that Huber served 27 years with the company. Levy said: "The Turner Broadcasting family suffered a great loss and we are saddened by the passing of our colleague and friend."
